Shipping Container Grades Explained: CW vs WWT vs One-Trip

Updated February 2026 · 6 min read

If you're shopping for a shipping container, the grading system can be confusing. Terms like "Cargo Worthy," "Wind and Water Tight," and "One-Trip" get thrown around loosely — and some sellers exploit that confusion to charge more or sell less than what you expect. Here's what each grade actually means, and how to choose the right one for your needs.

One-Trip Containers

A One-Trip container is exactly what it sounds like: a shipping container that has made a single international voyage, typically from the manufacturing facility in China to a port in the United States. These containers are in near-new condition with minimal cosmetic wear, intact factory paint, and no dents or patches.

One-Trip containers are the premium option — ideal for container homes, retail-facing builds, office conversions, or any project where appearance matters. They cost significantly more than used containers, typically ranging from $2,500 to $5,000+ depending on size. If you need a container that looks clean and requires no cosmetic work, One-Trip is the grade to buy.

Cargo Worthy (CW)

Cargo Worthy is a certification, not just a description. A CW container has been inspected by a licensed maritime surveyor and certified as structurally sound for international ocean shipping. This means the container passed inspection for wall integrity, floor condition, door seals, corner castings, and overall structural soundness.

CW containers are typically 8 to 15 years old with visible cosmetic wear — surface rust, paint fading, minor dents — but they are structurally solid. This is the grade you need if you're exporting goods internationally, as shipping lines require current CW certification. CW containers usually cost between $1,500 and $4,000.

Important: Every Cargo Worthy container is also Wind and Water Tight — but not every WWT container is Cargo Worthy. CW is a higher standard because it requires formal surveyor certification.

Wind & Water Tight (WWT)

Wind & Water Tight is the most popular container grade, accounting for roughly 60% of all consumer shipping container purchases. A WWT container is sealed — it keeps rain, wind, and moisture out — making it suitable for dry storage, job site storage, agricultural use, and general property storage.

WWT containers have not been recently surveyed by a licensed inspector. They're typically older than CW units and may have more cosmetic wear, but they hold up well for on-ground storage purposes. This is the sweet spot for most buyers who need reliable storage without paying for a surveyor certification they don't need. Prices range from $1,100 to $3,000 depending on size and location.

As-Is Containers

As-Is means exactly that — the container is sold in its current condition with no guarantees about water tightness, structural integrity, or usability. These containers may have holes, damaged doors, compromised floors, or significant rust. Some are usable for basic storage with repairs; others are only good for scrap.

As-Is containers are the cheapest option, but they come with risk. Always inspect an As-Is container in person before purchasing. Never buy an As-Is container sight unseen based on photos alone.

How to Spot a Scam: Painted As-Is Containers

This is the biggest scam in the container industry. Dishonest sellers take As-Is containers — often with holes, severe rust, or structural damage — apply a fresh coat of paint, and resell them as WWT or even CW grade at a significant markup. The paint hides the damage, and by the time the buyer realizes the problem, the seller is gone.

Here's how to protect yourself: Look for uniform, fresh paint that covers the entire container — legitimate used containers have uneven wear patterns, not showroom finishes. Check the floor carefully by walking the full length. Look at door seals and hinges. Ask for the container's BIC code (the identification number stamped on the door) and verify its history. And most importantly — buy from a reputable dealer with a physical business location and verifiable reviews.

Which Grade Should You Buy?

One-TripContainer homes, retail builds, office conversions, anything where appearance matters
CWInternational shipping, long-term storage where structural certification gives peace of mind
WWTProperty storage, farm storage, job sites, general dry storage — best value for most buyers
As-IsBudget projects where you can inspect first and handle repairs yourself
