How Shipping Container Delivery Works
Updated February 2026 · 5 min read
One of the most common questions we get at SC Express is "how does the container actually get to my property?" Shipping container delivery isn't like ordering furniture — these are 4,000 to 10,000 pound steel boxes that require specialized equipment. Here's exactly how it works.
Two Delivery Methods
Shipping containers are delivered on one of two types of trucks: a standard flatbed semi-trailer or a tiltbed (also called a rollback or tilt trailer). Which one you need depends entirely on whether you have equipment to offload the container yourself.
Flatbed Semi (You Unload)
A standard flatbed semi delivers the container on a flat trailer. This is the most affordable delivery option because it uses standard freight equipment. The catch: you need heavy equipment on site to lift the container off the truck. This means a forklift rated for the container weight (minimum 8,000 lbs for a 20' container), a crane, or a large tractor with forks.
If you're on a farm, construction site, or commercial property with equipment already available, this is the way to go. The driver pulls up, you offload with your equipment, and the truck leaves. Total delivery time on site is usually 15 to 30 minutes.
Tiltbed Trailer (We Place It)
A tiltbed trailer has a hydraulic bed that tilts to a steep angle, allowing the container to slide off the back and onto the ground. The driver can position the container precisely on your property — no additional equipment required on your end.
Tiltbed delivery costs more than flatbed because the specialized trailers are less common and take longer per delivery. However, for residential customers, homeowners, and anyone without heavy equipment, tiltbed is the only practical option. The driver handles everything — you just need to point to where you want the container placed.
Preparing Your Delivery Site
Before your container arrives, your site needs to be ready. Here's what the delivery truck requires:
Delivery Timeline
At SC Express, delivery timelines depend on where your container is coming from. Containers from our yard in Hildale, Utah ship same day to 1 business day — we load and dispatch quickly because the inventory is already here. Containers from our verified supplier network are available in 3 to 5 business days. Depot-direct containers at the lowest prices typically ship within 5 to 10 business days depending on carrier availability and distance.
How Delivery Cost Is Calculated
Delivery cost is based on mileage from the origin point to your delivery address. At SC Express, we calculate this automatically when you enter your address on our website — you see the exact delivered price before you buy, with no hidden fees added later.
Flatbed (semi drop) delivery is cheaper than tiltbed because it uses standard freight equipment. If you can unload a semi, you'll save on every delivery. We ask this upfront on our website so your price quote reflects the correct delivery method.
Self Pickup
If you have your own flatbed truck or want to arrange your own freight, you can pick up directly from our yard in Hildale, Utah or from any of our partner depot locations nationwide. Self-pickup eliminates delivery fees entirely and gets you the absolute lowest container price. Call us at (435) 253-6811 to coordinate pickup.
